Essential Style for (Undead) Massacres: The Connoisseur’s Zombie Kill Kit

With Halloween just around the corner, this article seems very appropriate - especially when you look into the darker side of man’s hunting instincts and the more recent fascination with zombie, vampire (and no, Twilight doesn’t count), psycho killer and monster movies.
Since its inception, Essential Style for Men has been primarily focused on the best in men’s style. For this article, however, we will focus on how an ESM man should prepare for the next zombie apocalypse.
More specifically, we are going to discuss the ESM weapon of choice for the inevitable arrival of the walking dead: A blade.
Why a blade, you ask?
Unlike a gun (so passé), a blade will never jam, run out of juice and you will be able to use it for just about anything your bare hands can’t do.
But how do you select the best tool for beheading “les zombies”?
When you do the research, you will find there are endless variations of blades. Each design harks back to a simpler time and specific use, down to the molecular quality of the metal used.
But if you are ever in a situation where you only have time to draw one blade, there is one that gets the ESM stamp of approval: A Ghurka Kukri blade.
More specifically, a Cold Steel version.
A quick Google search will reveal, the “Kukri” is a traditional Nepalese weapon still in use by the military. The Kukri is also a national icon where Nepalese men sport it for fashion and utility.
The utility factor is the key to its huge following.
Because of the dipped point and angle, the kukri makes for a massively effective slashing tool with minimal effort, where its cutting power relative to size makes it one of the most powerful type of blades in the world.
Even today the British Ghurka regiments deployed in Iraq keep getting in trouble for routinely hacking off limbs of enemies during combat.
I should mention it takes just a swift swing to cut both flesh and bone with a Kukri.
Today, Cold Steel makes a modernized version of the Kukri ranging from a $30 disposable machete to a $637 San Mai III grade metal version, with a 1/8” thick spine for maximum effect.
Whichever one you get your hands on, it’ll certainly be a deterring sight for any zombie looking for….brainssss.
