FEATURE: Lou Rodriguez Cigars

Lou Rodriguez cigars.

It’s hard to follow your dream sometimes.

But when your passion is strong it’s hard to deny making those dreams come true.   Case in point – Lou Rodriguez, an emergency room doctor of Cuban descent who decided to take his passion for cigars to another level by introducing his own brand of cigars to the market.

Since his launch, he’s gotten some favorable reviews from the cigar world:

This cigar is an excellent example of what a good maduro should taste like: it has nice tobacco sweetness and it’s earthy and savory. All that, and it still has its own unique character…  This is a fine cigar and will likely be one of my candidates for Best New Cigar of the Year.

From StogieFresh.com

This cigar rocked right from the start. The flavor and strength is full; however, it is not a nicotine bomb. This is a great cigar to end the day with a favorite libation. Beer, bourbon, scotch, or wine should all stand up to this wonderful cigar.

We had a chance to sit down with Lou Rodriguez to ask him a few questions about what it took to get to where he is now.

It is our understanding that this is your second career. What was your first career and how did you get into cigar making?
I have been an emergency medicine physician for the past 16 years.  Being a Cuban-American, however, cigars have always been a big part of my life.

I sought to create a line of luxury cigars that represented my selective taste.

Knowing that Jalapa Valley was the Napa Valley of cigar manufacturing, there was no doubt that was where I wanted to create my cigars.

How long has Lou Rodriguez cigars been in business?
2011 marked the official release of LR cigars but I have been working and developing the blends for years.

What makes your product different from other cigars on the market?
Having smoked premium cigars for many years I have a very refined pallet.

As such, I have created a cigar that meets my taste expectations and is reasonably priced.  The region of Nicaragua that I chose (as noted before) is the Napa Valley of cigars and the tobacco is coveted for its fine leaves and consistent flavor.

The rolling procedure that we use is an old Cuban technique that is unique and not utilized by most cigar manufactures.

What differentiates your brand from the competition?
We are a boutique cigar company which means we are an exclusive, luxury brand that limits our production and retailers regardless of demand.

Also, every aspect of the company is overseen by Cubans - some of whom have been in the business for over 60 years

Finally, the only place we sell our cigars online is charmedleaf.com which caters to boutique cigar companies only.

What is your personal philosophy on style?
I don’t follow trends or anything mass marketed.  I’m a classicist and respect companies that believe in tradition and heritage.  I’m a sucker for anything unique, well-tailored. And European.

Do you think you’re style has changed since you got into the cigar business?
Yes! I don’t find myself wearing scrubs as often as I used to.

What do you think are style essentials for any man?
Here is my list:

  • Don’t overlook accessories, they make the suit. My personal favorite is the pocket square; I think they really personalize the look.
  • I prefer cufflinks because buttons are just too plain.
  • Always wear the best shoes - Ferragamo’s are a favorite.
  • Finally, treasure the relationship with your hairdresser. I’ve been with the same hair dresser for 15 years.

What advice do you have for our readers?
Always be original and don’t forget success only comes after taking chances and making sacrifices. My biggest successes have come after taking two steps backwards.

Lou Rodriguez doing what he does best.
