FEATURE: Supperclub, Los Angeles

Wait, is this the Supperclub or are we watching a movie? Oh, it used to be a movie theater. Image from https://www.facebook.com/#!/supperclub.los.angeles.
If you’ve been going out in Hollywood over the past few months, the one club you have been hearing a lot about recently is Supperclub, Los Angeles.
Words such as “acrobats dropping from the ceiling” and “all white beds” and “amazing” and “incredibly beautiful women” are usually spoken in the same breath.

I have to admit, the first time I went I was slightly disappointed - I was there tagging along with a friend and the experience was nothing mind blowing for me.
The second time, however, was beyond words. I think the biggest reason was because we were fortunate enough to have both the dinner and the club experience.
For those of you who have never dined at a Supperclub before, the affair is much different from eating at a typical restaurant.
You show up, check-in and the hostess gives you a boarding pass. Yep - you heard it right - a boarding pass to get you and your party into the restaurant.
Once in, you wait at the bar behind floor to ceiling curtains which later open to unveil a huge room with white beds surrounding the main stage area.
The theme for the night was Asian, so standing in the main stage area was a sumo wrestler, geishas and a supporting crew wearing theme-appropriate costumes.

As we were seated in our, um, beds the first thing we noticed was a lack of menus.
Why? Because you don’t order. The food is brought out to you and is based on the theme for the evening.
Needless to say, all of the food was amazing.
But the food isn’t the only thing that made the dinner amazing… it was because of this guy:

At first I thought he was going to shave himself while we ate dinner. We then shortly realized he was a performer.
And this person:

And actually every performer during dinner. Supperclub Los Angeles has some of the most unique and innovative acts which makes the dining experience surreal.
After dinner, we did bottle service for the club portion of the evening. As dinner patrons, we actually had the opportunity to do a little dancing without the crowds as they prepared the beds/tables for the club.
Once the club opened, madness ensued.

So glad that wasn't our bottle. I would have been pissed. Image from https://www.facebook.com/#!/supperclub.los.angeles.
Try to imagine the best night you have ever had with your friends at one of the hottest clubs you have ever been to. Now multiply that times ten, add some ecstasy (figuratively of course) and throw in a large group of extremely attractive people.
At that point, you might get an inkling of how awesome Supperclub Los Angeles is.

My measure of an amazing night is how many times I have to stop myself and bask in awesomeness.
For this particular evening I must have easily done it 8 times because I looked out on the dancefloor and saw a sea of people with their hands up and dancing to the beat.
It’s so good to feel awesome with your friends around so many awesome people, especially with DJ Reflex controlling the crowd like a puppetmaster of awesome.
Seriously, how many times can I use the word “awesome” in an article?

I bet this never happens in that other club you go to. Image from https://www.facebook.com/#!/supperclub.los.angeles.
After having one of the best evenings, ever, we had a chance to sit down with Jerry Garcia, one of the owners of Supperclub Los Angeles and ask him about his new venture.
(ESM/Jerry)
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us Jerry. We are very happy to hear about your success with Supper Club, Los Angeles. Is this the first club you have ever owned? What were you doing before this?
This is my second one. The first one I ownded was Fly Lounge in Washington DC.
Before supperclub, I was an investment banker in San Francisco then moved to Los Angeles to run an artist management company. I found myself traveling between LA and Asia six times a years as I was also managing an investment fund in the Philippines.
It was only four years ago that I really settled down in LA when a good friend, Abdi Manavi, introduced me to the Supperclub Los Angeles project and we became business partners.

Did you expect the Supper Club to do this well?
With the economy the way it is, I kept my expectations very conservative.
As the months passed after our grand opening, we’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well Los Angeles has received and appreciated Supperclub.
Still, it’s only our first year and we’re focused on continuing to make sure we are always improving our services for years to come.
What makes Supperclub, Los Angeles different from other nightclubs in Los Angeles? What makes it different from other Supperclubs around the world?
Supperclub has been around for 20 years.
It originated in Amsterdam and what’s different from any other place in LA is the experience we offer. It is something we call the “celebration of 5 senses” where we set the tone from the norm… A place where you can let loose and be yourself.
It’s hard to explain but once you’ve been to a Supperclub, you’ll get it.
The one in LA is the largest of all 6 Supperclubs in the world. Each Supperclub stays true to its core philosophy which is “freedom” and then each venue takes on its own persona.
For example, Supperclub San Francisco is a bit more avant-gard in its performances as Los Angeles has a certain “wow” factor and is very grand in its size and operation.

We love how you utilize the performers that are dropped in from the ceiling a la Cirque du Soleil. How did you come up with this concept?
When we first saw the space several years back, the subject of aerial performances never came up until we spoke with our creative director who mentioned that we should have several drop points for aerial performers to come down from the ceiling.
Needless to say, we all agreed and it has turned out to be amazing!
Have you tried going down the ceiling yourself?
I have not gone down from the ceiling, but during one of our dinners, I was put into a large cloth harness from the floor and I was lifted about 10 feet from the ground. It was quite an experience.
This summer, you and your staff organized themes for each week. Tell us a little bit about how this came about and who comes up with the themes.
We have a creative director that oversees the performances. We have weekly meetings and ask our staff to be involved.
The idea this summer was to take our guests on a Supperclub “world vacation”. Every two weeks, we would go to a different country and explore the food and performances of that culture.
We empower our staff and management to be part of developing the whole experience for the customer. What we see is that our staff really gets into it and acts the parts.

For any of our readers interested in checking out Supper Club, Los Angeles, what advice would you give them?
For them to come to Supperclub with an open mind, mingle freely, eat exquisite cuisine, relax or dance, marvel at the array of performing artists and most importantly - have fun!
Essential Style for Men is all about men’s style. Being a successful businessman/restaurateur/club owner, what is your personal philosophy about men’s style?
For me, to have a balance in life. It starts by taking care of yourself before you can take care of others.
When we started Supperclub, I stopped going to the gym. It took a toll on my health because I was all about work.
Healthy body and mind will have you be more productive. For those that are excessive, there’s always that motto, work hard, play harder.
What does the near future hold for you and Supperclub Los Angeles?
We are in the process of building Supperclub Beirut next year, so I’m looking forward to the travelling.
Hmm, it looks like it’s time to grab our passports and get a ticket to Beirut.
