FASHION ESSENTIALS: The Basic Black Tie

The ever stylish Mr. Sinatra

The ever stylish Mr. Sinatra

Most guys don’t like wearing ties and there are probably guys out there that don’t even own one.  Sooner or later, however, there is going to be a time and place when you are going to need to wear one.

If you are going to buy one tie in your lifetime, please do everyone a favor and skip out on the cartoony-pastel-plaid selection at your local Target store.   The one tie that is going to sit in your closet should be one that you can use with every suit, for almost every occasion:  the basic black tie.  Satin or silk is best, but the most important thing is that the color is a solid black color.

Pair it with a black suit for a formal look, pair it with a gray suit for a James Bond circa Pierce Brosnan look, pair it with a pin-striped blue suit for a European banker look.  You can also wear it with a black shirt to give you the scary mafia look (if that’s your thing).

Thick or thin?  Doesn’t matter.  Just make sure you match the width of your tie with the width of the collar of your shirt.  Thick tie, heavier collar.  Thin tie, narrower collar.

Below are some more examples of where the black tie works:

To create Essential Style for Men, mix 2 parts petrol, 1 part secret agent, 1 part rock and roll, 1 part hip-hop and a shot of tequila in a shaker with ice and vigorously shake for 20 seconds. Pour into a martini glass rimmed with explosives and have a supermodel serve for all your friends to enjoy.

  1. I love the Sinatra image. I am about to publish an article on my blog about the sex appeal of ties. TIES HAVE SEX APPEAL. I will place a back link to your blog along with the caption to the Sinatra photo.

I should be publishing this before the end of the day Tuesday Feb 22. Any chance of a link to our blog and web site would be greatly appreciated. I will look over your blog to see what else you have that I would love to read
