FASHION ESSENTIALS: The Pea Coat
From the pea coat entry in Wikipedia:
A pea coat (or pea jacket, pilot jacket) is an outer coat, generally of a navy-colored heavy wool, originally worn by sailors of European navies. Pea coats are characterized by broad lapels, double-breasted fronts, often large wooden or metal buttons, and vertical or slash pockets. Although it first appeared in the early 19th century, modern renditions still maintain the original design and composition.
Always in style for the winter, you can pair this piece with a v-neck t-shirt or a turtleneck if things are a little too frosty. It’s also a great homage to military inspired fashion. (Amazing how we bring it all back. You’ll start seeing a pattern, trust me.)
There are a ton of retailers out there that carry these jackets every season, but look for one that will fit you well and will still look good 20 years from now.
My guess is you will probably be using it for a long time.

I consistently fail to find a designer who caters to different body types.. I have a small (ish) frame and a wider than normal hip bones (size 34 waist) and have trouble finding something that looks good.. other than suits.. Size 50 just sits perfectly! I dread the day I shop for pants/trousers.. I have to push up the waste too high to make for my dreaded hip bones and therefore suffer a painful crotch squeeze when I sit
the lowest waist Salsa jeans are just about the only ones that sit comfortably. Now to tops.. if slim, them make me look bony! HELP!
What’s up Brosnan, thanks for reading the site.
I guess you have a couple of options in the suit department. For ready to wear you can get seperates (where you can get a different size top from the pants) from a few different brands. Banana Republic and Zara usually gives you those types of options, but they’re ready to wear so they aren’t perfectly fitted and you have to find the brands and styles that work for your particular body type.
We’ve also been talking to some folks from Astor & Black and they do full suits that are tailored just for you and I heard they can do them for about $1,000 or less.
And then you can always rock out and get a custom suit from the top end designers, but that will cost you a pretty penny.
For more casual clothes, you may want to consult stylists that are available at some of the department stores like Nordstrom or Bloomingdales. They may be able to help you out with brands and clothes that work just for you.
I’m not sure what your budget is but hopefully this helps you out.
Stay awesome.
