For today’s installment of Style, we’re fortunate to interview blogger, fashionista, stylist, socialite and artist Franko Dean.
Franko has a positive energy about him as can be seen on his website, FrankoDean.com, where he writes about his fashion, his art and his on-the-go lifestyle.
We took some time to talk to Frank Dean about his website, his personal sense of style and any style advice he can give our readers.
We love your website, FrankoDean.com. What was your inspiration to start your website? What do you think differentiates you from all the other blogs out there? What were some of the initial challenges you experienced and some of the rewards you have experienced so far?
The inspiration for my website started with the necessity to put together my art, fashion, travel photography, events, etc. in one place and at the same time share it with my friends, family and followers.
I get inspired by other bloggers out there because everyone has something you can learn from. It was a little hard at the beginning, writing a post, having my pictures taken, getting all the ideas of what to talk about, etc. But over time I have met a lot of people who helped me improve in many ways.
Additionally, I’m so grateful with the sponsors, brands and all the support from followers and the people interested in what I do – that’s been my reward so far.
Tell us about yourself. Are you based out of Miami? Is your real name Franko Dean? What is the root of your passion for art and fashion? Are you a full time blogger or do you have a day job?
My name is Franko Dean and I’m based between Chicago and Miami.
As a kid I used to enjoy choosing my own clothes, putting together outfits to go to parties, family Sundays, etc.
I have always been interested in art – I’m a big fan of pop art – and I used to make my own clothes, cutting, sewing, drawing and painting my shirts, jeans and other clothes.
Blogging started out as a hobby but now is part of my everyday life.
ESM is all about style. If you could describe your personal style in one sentence, what would it be? Additionally, what advice would you give readers who are also trying to develop their style on a budget?
I don’t have a specific personal style; it depends in the mood I’m in that day or the event I’m attending.
There’s no rules for me in fashion and that’s what makes it fun!
The advice I can give is – style is not about labels, fashion is about style. You can mix a brand with non-expensive items and come out with a great outfit!
What are your favorite casual looks and formal looks on your blog right now?
I will choose all of them but just to mention some casual looks:
- Flower power
- Into the wild
And some formal ones:
- Take me to church
- Franko X Daniel Wellington
- Dapper Casual
Tell us a little bit about your art background. How did it develop over the years? Do you think your art has affected your fashion choices? In what way?
I started painting when I was 6 yrs old. My canvasses were my shirts and I turned them into art. I always wanted to stand out and do things differently with my clothes.
I’m a big fan of Pop Art and Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring are some of my inspirations to name a few.
What brands and designers are your favorite? For our readers on a budget who love your style, what brands and designers would your recommend?
Dan and Dean from (Dsquared), Ovadia and Sons, Viktor and Rolf to name a few.
One of my favorite stores is Zara and I also like to go to thrift stores to find unique pieces.
You also describe yourself as a socialite. Tell us a little bit about how a typical day (and night) is for Franko Dean. Does it involve a lot of parties and going out? Where are your favorite spots?
Yes, I love to go out partying!
A typical Saturday for me is to select a perfect outfit to go to dinner, then attend an event and/or end up at the best spot in the city I’m visiting.
Has your style developed as your blog has developed? If so, how has it changed?
Of course my style has developed – I’ve been challenged to put outfits together and wear certain clothes I’ve never worn before with a touch of my own style.
Has your life been affected by your blog? If so, in what way?
Yes, my life has been affected in a special way. I know more styles, I’ve met a lot of people, I’ve attended fashion and special events and I get recognized by people in the streets who tell me they love my style.
I feel so happy they get the inspired and in turn they inspire me to go on.
Do you have any style icons? Who are they and why?
Marlon Brando, James Dean are my style icons from the past. Nick Wooster inspires me to age with style. Finally, Mariano Di Vaio and Adam Gallagher were big inspirations when I started this adventure.
At ESM, we have a list of “Style Essentials” or pieces that every man should have in his wardrobe. Do you have your own list of style essentials? What are they?
Franko Dean’s essentials are:
- White t-shirt
- Black biker leather jacket
- Blue dark jeans
- Black shirt
- A pair of wingtips
- Dark sunglasses are a must!
What does the future hold for Franko Dean?
Many many plans…
I see a brand of my own clothing coming soon, as well as an accessories line, growing as a blogger and keep inspiring (and getting inspiration) from everyone around.
