Hate going to karaoke bars because you end up sitting around listening to people who are just waiting for their 15 seconds of fame? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Karaoke bars are usually full of folks who regularly go and have practiced the same songs over and over again.
I say screw not having fun on karaoke night – that’s why we created “Stroke of Genius” (SOG) Karaoke. This game is not a test of singing ability; it’s a game of song selection and timing. How does it work? The rules are simple:
- You must pick a song that is uncommon at karaoke bars (please, no Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood)
- You must sing the song when the entire bar is trashed
- To win, you must have the entire bar go crazy and someone say (or think), “that song choice was genius.”
When we first started playing the game, we tried using some pre-selected judges, but it didn’t take long for us to realize that there will always be a clear winner. Here are some of the winning songs for SOG Karaoke games in the past:
- Just a Friend by Biz Markie
- Poison by Bell Biv Devoe
- My Prerogative by Bobby Brown
I realize that these songs are all hip-hop/dance songs, but they seem to work because the entire bar ends up standing up and dancing.
Remember, the real key to winning this game is timing. I have actually sang some pretty good song choices (such as Borderline by Madonna and Here I Go Again by Whitesnake) and they didn’t work because I picked the song on the wrong night. The crowd didn’t feel it at all.Lastly – don’t sweat the whole singing part. If you pick a good song, everyone else is going to be singing with you and you can just move the mic from one person to another. It’s all good.
