It all starts with a finger pistol, running around in the backyard playing cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians. I had a cap gun when I was a kid. A chrome-looking plastic revolver that snapped when you pulled the trigger. When I got older I graduated to a bb gun and any empty lot became a shooting range with bottles and cans for targets.
Now, I like paintball, or shooter games, but there is nothing like feeling the power of actually firing a weapon. The kick, the smell of gunpowder, and the sound combine for an intoxicating experience. No matter if you have never shot a gun, or if you feel pretty comfortable taking out a target from 60 feet, going to the range is a great field trip that’s a bit out of the ordinary.
If you are in the L.A. area, there is the L.A. Gun Club downtown, or the LAX Range near the airport. I prefer an outdoor range, and although you may have to drive a little further, the Angeles Shooting Range is a great spot. With Nevada’s lax gun laws, you can rent and shoot fully automatic weapons at places like the Las Vegas Gun Range and The Gun Store.
If you want to kick it up a notch and test your inner Rambo, try taking a tactical class. You will learn safe gun handling, proper shooting technique, and advanced applications like taking cover and engaging multiple targets. LAX Range offers a handful of tactical class options, and International Tactical Training Seminars (ITTS) is another great group of people to train with. Always remember, safety is paramount. Now hand me that rocket launcher!
