So what makes the difference between an ESM Icon and other icons from other sites/magazines? I think the best representation of this difference would be our next selection: John F. Kennedy.
I was reading an article from Time about President Kennedy, his easy style and how it inspires so many designers today, from Michael Kors to Thomas Browne. But what made John F. Kennedy great was not his style, but who he was as a person. His style was simply an extension of his persona.
So there lies the difference – an ESM Icon isn’t defined by his clothing or style, rather, an ESM Icon is defined by who he is. That is why JFK’s style was so easy – he didn’t need to think about what he wore because what he wore was JFK.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the old adage, “the clothes make the man”. In our world, it is the opposite – it is the man inside that makes the man… and his style.
